SIGNAL FLOW & GAIN STRUCTURE

Trace the audio path, maintain useful headroom and make level decisions intentionally.

KNOW WHERE THE SOUND GOES

Signal flow is the route audio takes from the source to the output. If you cannot trace that route, you cannot reliably diagnose level changes, distortion, phase interactions or unwanted processing.

GAIN STRUCTURE IS NOT A MAGIC NUMBER

You will often hear rules such as ‘every channel must peak at -18 dBFS’ or ‘the premaster must peak at -6 dBFS’. These can be useful habits in some workflows, but they are not laws of digital audio. The practical goal is to avoid unintended clipping, leave enough room for processing and keep levels comfortable enough that you are not constantly compensating with the master fader.
Good habit: start sources at sensible levels, keep an eye on buses as signals combine and deliberately control any clipping or saturation. If something is clipping, know where and know why.

WHY LEVEL CHANGES FOOL YOUR EARS

Louder often sounds more exciting in a quick comparison. When judging whether EQ, compression, saturation or another processor actually improved the sound, match the perceived output level as closely as practical. Otherwise you may be choosing the louder version rather than the better version.

PHASE AND LOW-END INTERACTION

In bass-heavy music, two individually strong sounds can become weak when combined. Kick and sub, layered snares, parallel paths and stereo processing can all change the result through timing and phase relationships. Do not automatically reach for a polarity button or phase tool — first listen to the combined result, check the timing and understand which relationship is actually causing the loss.

PRACTICAL TASK

Choose one important element in your current track. Trace every stage it passes through. Write down each place its level can change. Bypass processors one at a time, level-match where possible, and note whether each stage is correcting a problem, adding character or simply making the signal louder.
