A SHORT HISTORY OF MIKE / DJ K-LYDE

Mike’s route through electronic music began in Germany in the early 1990s. After early appearances at Subways in Hiltrup, Münster, he became part of the Cosmic Club scene, playing House, Trance and Techno on club nights and Breaks, Rave, Jungle and emerging Drum & Bass at larger events. That period also led to appearances at major German dance events, DJ-equipment work and radio.
By 1997 he was appearing on Evosonic Radio in Köln. He later worked with BFBS Radio Germany, including dance-music production and presentation. In 2002 he returned to the UK to study Music Production and, at the same time, was recruited to teach at Northampton College.
His teaching covered Music Technology and Sound Production from BTEC First through to National Award level, including DJ Skills, Analogue Synthesis, Computer Music Production, Sampling, Promotion & Marketing, Events Management and the History of Broadcasting. He later set up his own recording studio and tuition services and completed a BA (Hons) in Popular Music.
Why this matters to the course:
The teaching is shaped by years spent performing, broadcasting, producing, engineering and teaching. The point is not to hand you a fixed recipe. It is to help you understand what is happening well enough to make your own decisions.

THE RULE FOR THIS MODULE

If you cannot explain why something is in the signal path, why a level is set where it is, or what problem a processor is solving, stop and check the decision. Complexity should earn its place.
