WORKFLOW IS DECISION ORDER

A workflow is not a list of favourite plugins. It is the order in which you make decisions. A good workflow helps you solve the biggest musical problem first, then move toward detail. A poor workflow encourages you to polish sounds that may later be replaced or to mix around arrangement problems.

THE FIVE PASSES

PASS 1 — INTENT: What is this track trying to do? Club pressure, atmosphere, movement, emotion, space?

PASS 2 — STRUCTURE: Does the arrangement create a reason to keep listening?

PASS 3 — BALANCE: Can the important elements already be heard before heavy processing?

PASS 4 — CONTROL: Fix masking, dynamics, phase, transient or tonal problems that are actually audible.

PASS 5 — CHARACTER: Add automation, movement, distortion, width, ambience and detail after the record already works.

CREATIVE VS CORRECTIVE WORK

Creative decisions decide what the record is: sound choice, rhythm, melody, texture, arrangement and movement.

Corrective decisions make that idea translate more clearly: level, EQ, compression, phase, clipping, limiting and technical cleanup.
Checkpoint: If you are using EQ to create excitement that the arrangement does not have, or compression to make a weak sound choice feel powerful, you may be solving the wrong problem.

PRACTICAL TASK

Take a current project and write down the single biggest problem in each of these categories: intent, structure, balance, control and character. Work through them in that order. Do not jump forward until the earlier problem is good enough.
